Animal Farm

How are these conditions ironic? Recall that irony is the opposite of the expected outcome. Think of the animals' hopes at the beginning of the book right after chasing Mr. Jones from the farm.

Certainly it is ironic that Old Major was a pig whose vision was for animal equality. This farm is anything but equal. Napoleon and his select group of pigs make farmer Jones look like the Patron Saint of Animals. Most of the animals are near starving while the Napoleon lives in a house, sleeps in a bed and eats whatever he wants.
