Toothaker was personal friends with the Negroes and had also cared for both Lily and Lydia when they'd been ill. Dr. Toothaker also indentures his son to a black tanner.

Amos had known the boy's father in the Woburn days for Dr. Toothaker then lived in nearby Billerica and he had always been a good friend to the Negroes. He had tended both Lily and Lydia in their last illnesses and would never accept any payment from Amos.
