In Chapter Two, Luis refers to the "clubs" as necessary for both protection and a sense of family. Luis' gang activity was a response to his life, the clubs (gangs) provided safety from both neighborhood violence and the police, as well as the death of his friend, Tino. Luis didn't approve of gang violence, but his personal experience with violence left him wanting to be the giver instead of the receiver... a form of vengeance or payback.
