Paul is nostalgic about the camaraderie of the barracks. The men make personal connections here and voice their deepest thoughts. The men hypothesize that military men become disciplinarian bullies once they rise in rank. Kat believes that the power balances in the military are reflective of how "man is essentially a beast."
