The German army is in terrible shape in the last months of the war. Few men even have proper boots or clothes. Their guns are worn out and they have little ammunition left. The German soldiers envy the rations of the British who get corned beef and fresh cheese. The German soldiers get stale bread and stale cheese. The German army is also running out of men so the recruits get younger and younger: mere boys.
