What is Paul looking for when he sits in his room at home? Why can't he find it? When is the best time to observe nature? Why does Paul wish he had never returned home on leave?

Paul is looking for the boy he used to be..... a connection to the past. While he examines the books in his old room, he attempts to think back on his youth, but nothing comes--he is only a soldier. Paul has lost himself...... and even the familiarity of home can't help him find who he once was.
