Paul is generally a sympathetic and reliable protagonist. Paul is never seriously injured so his descriptions about operations seem grounded in observation. He, however, is often desperate for his friends to get help and be okay. He turns his frustrations on the surgeons who are often ill equipped, under supplied, overworked, and undertrained.
