What was the importance of the Great Depression and Second World War to the play?

The second World War and the Great Depression are far removed in this story. The aftermath of the war is integral to the plot, as Keller's actions are directly related to the deaths of soldiers for his own financial gain, and his son's death, which although unrelated, has had a direct affect on each of the main characters.
