Before the nuclear war, Randy was rather aimless and lazy. Really he is sort of a "playboy" who rebukes commitment and responsibility. Randy is also laid back enough not to harbour a lot of prejudices. He has another side to his personality when he is really tested. He doesn't covet things that do not matter, especially after a world altering event like this one. He is able to shed his lazy non comital side and take control of the situation.
