A Thousand Splendid Suns is set in the year, 2000. During this time, Afghanistan was suffering from a national drought. As the drought continues, the people begin to leave their homes in search of water. It was also at this time that smuggled copies of the movie Titanic began to appear in Kabul, and Aziza insists the family play Titanic continuously. From the text, we can infer that the people of Afghanistan attached themselves to the film because they so desparately wanted to be rescued from their plight.
