Hosseini's depiction of the preparations for the funeral illustrate the way in which gender expectations permeate every aspect of the community. The women take care of the women, in this case the women care for Fariba..... thus illustrating women as the caregivers in the community. The ceremony itself separates the men and the women, and thus separates Fariba and Hakim in their grief. As for the separate bonding between the men and the women, you have a strong sense of community. This doesn't, however, help the genders relate to one another.
