A Separate Peace

What do you think Gene means when the adult Gene states that he had never cried about Finny, that at Finny's funeral he had a feeling it had been his own?

Recall his earlier remark that his purpose had been to become a part of Finny.

By this point in the book their relationship had moved from obsessive to really mentally unstable. These two guys wanted to be each other. Sure there was the underlying homo-erotic sexual tension but their obsession to inhabit each other's very being became an overriding force in their relationship. Finny's death meant the death ofGene's identity as well. Yes, it's rather creepy!
