Finny asks Gene "Isn't the bone supposed to be stronger when it grows together over a place where it's been broken once?" How might this line and the ones that follow be interpreted literally and symbolically?

Literally Gene is talking about Finny's leg injury. This can also be seen as a metaphor for Gene and Finny's relationship. Their relationship never fully healed when Gene betrayed Finny that day at the tree.
