Do you think that Gene's feeling of guilt affirmed that he had caused Finny's injury?

Although, we don't really know for sure in this chapter, Gene did cause Finny's fall. Thus, his overwhelming guilt is an affirmation. None-the-less, I do not believe he meant Finny harm. Nor, do I believe he wanted to see him with a shattered leg. Gene wanted to prove he was the better competitor, and he cheated to prove it.
