What parallels, small or large, do you see between the society depicted in 1984 and our own modern world?

Much like the Inner Party in 1984, some governments today, I won't name any names here, prefer propaganda to facts. Creating truth is better than the actual truth if a irresponsible government wishes to stay in power. Propaganda is used as a way to "inform" a populist base of people to make whatever the state wants into reality. This is the essence of 1984 as well as the goal for many autocratic states in the past.
