Disgraced

Disgraced Character List

Amir Kapoor

The protagonist of Disgraced, Amir is an American-born lawyer who has renounced his Islamic identity and changed his surname from Abdullah to obscure that his family is Muslim. Amir is married to Emily, a white artist who uses forms from traditional Islamic art as inspiration. Although Amir has made great efforts to assimilate into American mainstream culture, his Muslim background undermines his chances of being made partner at his law firm. A heavy drinker, Amir's resentment and violent nature emerge as his career and marriage crumble around him.

Emily Hughes-Kapoor

Emily is Amir’s white Anglo-Saxon protestant (WASP) wife. Her paintings are inspired by Islamic tradition, which she believes is just as foundational to Western culture as Greek and Roman influences. Emily rejects claims that her work is orientalist, but at one point calls Amir her "muse." Emily is supportive of her husband, but it is revealed that she cheated on him with Isaac.

Isaac

Isaac is a Jewish-American art curator working for the Whitney Museum of American Art. Married to Jory, Isaac treats Amir with hostility and condescension, and it is eventually revealed that Isaac is in love with Emily, who he slept with on a trip to London.

Jory Braithwaite

Jory is an African-American lawyer who works at the same firm as Amir and is married to Isaac. Jory receives the promotion to partner that Amir expected to receive, causing Amir to berate her for her lack of work ethic. Jory catches her husband Isaac trying to kiss Emily.

Abe

Abe is Amir's nephew. Born in Pakistan, Abe lives in New York with a vulnerable immigration status that he worries the FBI will try to exploit to make him an informant. Abe changes his name from Hussein to obscure his Muslim identity, but changes it back by the end of the play, when he reveals to Amir that he has become radicalized and is turning to Islamic fundamentalism.

Mort

Mort is one of Amir's bosses at the law firm. Mort depends on Amir, but Jory reveals at the end of the play that Mort doesn't trust Amir enough to make him partner.

Steven

Steven is another of Amir's bosses at the law firm. Steven grows concerned about Amir's involvement with Imam Fareed, and accuses Amir of antisemitism after Amir says Steven wouldn't care if the imam were a rabbi.

Imam Fareed

Imam Fareed is an imam attached to Abe's mosque. The imam is being tried for allegedly fundraising for terrorism. With reluctance, Amir appears at the imam's trial to support him. The resulting newspaper article jeopardizes Amir's legal career, as it appears that he represented a man tied to terrorism.
