Why was sleep difficult for any prisoner at camp greyhound ?

The camp was packed with "prisoners" charged with looting and other offences.  “1,200 detainees were bussed into the depot where they were processed and held for many days without trial..." They were in holding cells in close proximity to each other. Naturally sleep would have been difficult.
