In the closing paragraphs of Chapter Ten, Loomis worries that Edward has been in the house. He is still suffering from delusions and fever, but Loomis' dreams cause Ann to wonder why if Edward was actually Loomis' friend.... why would he want to shoot him.

So it was Edward again. But I am worried. If he is dreaming about Edward, who was, I suppose, a friend of his, why does he want to shoot him?
