There is the whole unexplained minister behind the black veil that casts an eerie sense over the story. The veil is black and ominous. People seem to see their own dark sins mirrored in this veil. The mood and tone has a sense of brooding and foreboding through it until the Minister dies a very dark and mysterious death.
