We wonder if Young Goodman Brown had a spiritual reckoning or just a really bad dream. In both cases Brown had gone searching for Faith, literally and figuratively, and found only the pious of the village and his pretty pink ribbon wearing wife at the altar of the Devil. The next day Brown cannot find solace in his wife's bosom or the symbolic bosom of his faith: everything is corrupt. So, Young Goodman Brown shrinks from the bosom of Faith and he dies a "hoary corpse."
