When Mr. Earnshaw began to feel the effects of ill health the two boys, Heathcliff and Hindley, became more and more at odds. The parish curate stepped in and suggested that Hindley be sent to college in order to better prepare for his future, something that would also be beneficial is removing tension.

"At last, our curate... advised that the young man should be sent to college; and Mr. Earnshaw agreed, though with a heavy spirit, for he said--"Hindley was nought, and would never thrive as where he wandered."
