why did hindley wanted to kill heathcliff ?

Heathcliff was brough home by Mr. Earnshaw as an orphan. Hindley sees Heathcliff as a rival rather than a "brother". Mr. Earnshaw begins to favor Heathcliff above both Hindley and his daughter Catherine. Hindley has years of built up fury and resentment against his adopted "brother".
