For most of the novel Hareton is rough, rustic, and uncultured, having been carefully kept from all civilizing influences by Heathcliff. He grows up to be superficially like Heathcliff, but is really much more sweet-tempered and forgiving. He never blames Heathcliff for having disinherited him, for example, and remains his oppressor's staunchest ally. Edgar Linton is not much different in temperament. He is good natured if a little boring. Unlike Hareton, Edgar has lead a pampered life. He is sensitive which puts him at odds with the more rough Hareton. The first time we see him he is weeping over a puppy.
