In Chapter Nine, Palmer explains "pigeon day" to Dorothy in a graphic and frightening manner. He surprises her when he tells her there will be at least 5,000 pigeons dead at the end of the day, and even goes so far as to provide sound effects for a pigeon whose neck is being snapped. Dorothy runs away.
