What is wrong with Auggie?

Auggie was born with a severe facial deformity that required multiple surgeries. When we first meet Auggie in the beginning of the novel, he's already been through twenty-seven surgeries.

People think I haven't gone to school because of the way I look, but it's not that. It's because of all the surgeries I've had. Twenty-seven since I was born.
