In the first few chapters of the novel, we meet Auggie, a ten-year-old boy with a facial deformity. When the story begins, we learn that Auggie has been home-schooled all his life and is apprehensive about enrolling in a real school for the first time. Auggie is very intelligent, but he's also extremely self-conscious about his looks.... keeping his head down. It turns out Auggie isn't just imagining things, as some of his classmates are extremely cruel.
