Auggie takes a chance on life. At the beginning of the book, Auggie risks leaving his familiar but stagnant life for the chaos of public school. Initially Auggie is shy and introverted. Through facing challenges and turmoil, Auggie becomes a much more self-aware and confidant young man. He makes his own friends, like Summer and Jack, and learns to understand the people in his life that are not nice to him.
