The Best

Jason is the standout of the fellows working under Dr. Kelekian and is an excellent oncologist and researcher. Ironically, he has no bedside manner and is hardly capable of seeing Vivian as a human being rather than research.

Susie

Susie represents the type of person that Vivian does not want to be around. She has heart and cares for people and is willing to be sentimental. All things Vivian is repulsed by. Ironically, Vivian finds comfort from Susie who is the only person who treats her like a person who is about to die and needs someone to be there for them.

Student

Jason is the fellow attending to Vivian's care during her experimental cancer treatment. Ironically, Jason has also taken Vivian's poetry class. She finds it embarrassing to now have a student examining her ovaries.

Donne's Holy Sonnets

Vivian is a scholar of Donne's Holy Sonnets. She's devoted her entire life to his work. Ironically, when Ashford offers to recite one of the sonnets to her, Vivian refuses to allow her to utter another word of his poetry. Instead, she has her read The Runaway Bunny, a children's story to her.

Scholar

Vivian is a scholar of seventeenth-century poetry. She has become the leading expert in Donne's Holy Sonnets as she has committed to a lifetime of study in order to explore his work and teach it at University level. Ironically, Vivian has had no one to share her life we and we watch as she has only one visitor before her death.
