Why george's father gave the advice: "be a sharp one" and " don't let anyone know that you are a greenhorn" to his son?

I wanna know what is the meanning of greenhorn in the literary way of thinking.

The way George's father says this sounds like a sort of encouraging admonition to "act like you know what you're doing." Because the new world George is about to experience is rather cutthroat and "dog eat dog," his father feels the need to warn him against looking wounded or unfit to survive.
