The symbolism of gay culture

The gay culture in the book is symbolized by the carefree attitude and the relationship among boys. Firstly, the reader is introduced to Grayson, who falls in love with Tiny, a fellow boy. Similarly, Will falls in love online with a boy who does not exist in reality. These boys have a carefree attitude, and they do not care about what people say about their relationships.

Maura is a symbol of desperation.

Maura is a beautiful young girl who falls in love with Will online. However, Maura realized that Will is interested in having a sexual relationship with a fellow boy. Therefore, Maura desperately disguises herself as Isaac so that she could win the love of Will. Consequently, the gay culture is making girls desperate to the extent of faking themselves as boys to get affection.

The symbolism of love

Love is symbolized by Tiny’s play which talks about intimacy. Tiny decides to rewrite his play to reflect after kissing Will the last night. However, the love discussed in the play is between boys, who symbolize the gay culture in society.

Same-sex relationships as a symbol of sexual identity crisis

The reader finds it obvious that there is an identity crisis among the characters, especially boys. Boys in this book do not want to associate themselves with girls sexually. For instance, boys are kissing each other, and they feel okay with the act. Therefore, the boys are suffering from a sexual identity crisis that needs an urgent solution.
