To what degree does Jack see Babette clearly? What does he want from his relationship with her? How does she change, if at all?

In the beginning, Jack sees exactly what he wants to see. Babette is a good wife and mother; she's loving, open, helpful, honest ect. In Babette, Jack finds what he's never had in marriage, a partner. What he does not see clearly is that her persona is marked by prescription drugs (experimental drugs to boot). After this discovery, things start to unravel. Jack finds out that his wife has been unfaithful in order to feed her addiction (she's sleeping with her doctor); he finds she's terrified of death, that she is not the woman he believed her to be. In response, Babette changes from a loving, giving wife and mother into an evasive, unstable cynic.
