Where the red fern grows

This is essentially a coming of age story. The book centers on raccoon, or "coon," hunting in the Ozark Mountains of Oklahoma during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Billy, the young protagonist, seeks to prove himself and his dogs in a hunting contest.
