A good source of internal conflict in this story might be the determination of Billy. Although he is not affluent or naturally skilled, he overcomes obstacles by showing "grit" and saving for two years in order to buy his dogs. He loves them dearly, and he showed it by dealing with the uncertainty and hardship.
