what causes Little Ann's death

When the 'big cat' attacks, Little Ann only receives a shoulder wound. Everyone else's wounds are far more serious, but Little Ann lost her will to live and died. She was devastated over Old Dan's death and doesn't seem to have had anything else to live for.
