Both dogs have to catch a lot of coons. When Billy does not want to kill the "Ghost Coon" Rubin and Rainie get angry, the Pritchards' Bluetick Coonhound comes up and challenges Old Dan. Both dogs fight.
Both dogs are entered in the big "racoon contest" for $300. Both dogs go through a blizzard ( they are frozen dogs) but stay with their quarry.
They win the contest but a mountain lion attacks them the next day. Old Dan is killed in the attack and Little Ann dies of a broken heart.
