We can only dig so far with this book but there are some themes here. Firstly there is the bond between a boy and his dog(s).The relationship is steeped in tradition, almost like a communion. It would seem that every boy living in rural United States yearns for a hunting dog. There are a few other themes here. America is just great and traditional Christian family values are great too! Billy's family may not have much money but they are close. Mother is wise and nurturing, father is strong and caring and Grandpa is the fun-loving side-Kick of the family.
