How does Billy rescue little Ann after her accident?

Little Ann gets into a scuffle with a mountain lion. He tries to help Little Ann, who is wounded, but gets himself into trouble. His dogs protect him with their lives, and Billy ends up putting an axe in its back while it is fighting with Dan. Old Dan dies from his injuries. Little Ann follows him.... she dies of a broken heart.
