We Wear the Mask

The speaker says," We sing, but Oh, the clay is vile / beneath our feet, and long the mile." (Lines 12-13) What is the most likely interpretation of these lines?

What is the mostly interpertation of these lines?

In context, the lines might be translated that "We sing, but the mud we must walk through is disgusting (vile) and the mile seems long."
