We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves Imagery

Climbing the bars

When Rosemary was in prison, she climbed the bars of her prison cell to look outside and to see how far the bars stretched. The image portrayed her is that of a young girl, almost feral who refuses to behave in a normal way like the other people around her.

Perfect family

Todd is Rosemary’s roommate, a child coming from a broken family and whose parents were divorced. Because of this, when Todd talks about Rosemary’s parents and her family as a whole, he portrays them as being the perfect family. This is however far from the truth and just because Rosemary’s parents were still together that didn’t mean that they were the perfect family.

Tied to the bed

When Rosemary ran away from her grandparents she ended up in a stranger’s house while she was looking for help. There, while she was looking for the bathroom, stumbled upon a woman tied to the bed, with a gag in her mouth. What was even more puzzling for the young Rosemary was the fact that the woman didn’t seemed to mind her position. The image is important because it marks the beginning of Rosemary discovering her sexuality and her first real positive contact with things of sexual nature.

Tarzan

When Rosemary is asked who her favorite superhero is, she responds by saying Tarzan even though those around her don’t consider Tarzan as being a superhero. Her response however reveals something more about Rosemary and about the things she considers as being exceptional. For her, a fictional character with supernatural powers is not a real hero but rather someone who can connect with nature and with the animals around him.
