Why does Townsend return to Catherine after twenty years?

Townsend returns because Aunt Lavinia mistakenly informs him that Catherine is still interested and invited him to their home. Morris, on the other hand, is a bit of a mystery.... his love affairs have been failures, as have all of hi attempts at business, thus, it seems that Catherine is still a desirable prospect. None-the-less, we never learn the true reason..... was it money.... or love?
