Much of the novel revolves around Austin Sloper's attempts to make Catherine more like her mother. You can assume from this that if Mrs. Sloper had not passed away, Catherine's life would have been much more cheerful and with significantly less suffering.

There might have been many more children and the whole family dynamic would have been different.
