Trench warfare is combat in which opposing armies defend, attack and counterattack from relatively fixed systems of holes dug into the ground. Most men who charged over the trenches were brutally shot in no -man's land. It was especially barbaric and brutal to use the gentle creatures, horses, in such a hideous environment. There was unspeakable suffering by these placid gentle animals.
