In my opinion, the universal note touched on by Whitman in this poem speaks to commonalities and shared experiences that connect strangers. In context, the ferry preceded the bridge, the pedestrian and wagon preceded the automobile, and yet, the water was constant.... everyone shared the East River.... past, present, and future.
