Whitman believed that he and Lincoln were kindred spirits, and they saw each other almost everyday after Lincoln's election. Whitman had great admiration for the President. "O Captain, My Captain," was written after the end of the Civil War and after Lincoln's assassination; it was published in the second issue of Drum Taps. It is a simple three-stanza poem that denotes Whitman's grief over the Lincoln's death. The public loved it!
