Wallace Stevens: Poems Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Wallace Stevens's poetry can be compared to the works of other Modernist poets, such as Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, and Marianne Moore, among others. Influences on Stevens's work include the British Romantic poets (particularly Keats and Wordsworth), French Symbolists (Mallarmé, Verlaine), as well as Whitman and Baudelaire. Stevens was also inspired by the paintings of Klee, Cézanne, and Matisse. Consider reading or evaluating these writings and works of art that inspired (or were inspired by) Stevens, as well as having students research literary analyses of Modernism and subsequent movements.
