Why do you think Thoreau singles out individual groups of readers as he begins his first essay?

Thoreau was all about the individual. Thoreau encourages his readers to seek the divinity within rather than relying on an outside force or other people to help them know the path to self-realization. Thoreau believed it was the individual that forged his own destiny rather than community or government. This is why he addresses each individual reader.
