How does the railroad symbolizes the destruction of the pastoral way of life?

The rairoad whistle disturbs his peace; the railroad brings commerce, and it brings people. Thoreau never intended to become a hermit, but he did intend to embrace the solitude of pastoral living. The railroad became a detriment to his desire to live spiritually in nature.
