Booker faced many challenges is acquiring an education. He had to work and help the family, and even after given permission to attend school during the day, he was always late because his work hours were adjusted to an earlier time. Booker also notes his lack of head covering, and that the other students wore different clothing. Secondly, Booker mention his name, or lack of surname, as he'd never had one, so he gave himself the last name of Washington. Lastly, day school only lasted a short period of time, after which, Booker had to go back to night school. This was challenging because he had to find a satisfactory teacher, and he also had to walk great distances to meet his teachers.
