Washington's views on slavery were not as severe or as angry as Douglass', although like Douglass, he was born into slavery.

Both men help education in high esteem. They were both self-taught.

Douglass was a licensed lay preacher and a Christian. Washington believed that character education/ religious and spiritual education was an important part of raising children, and that there was a necessity for a "black church."
