How could a freed man or woman still be enslaved after slavery was outlawed?

After the end of slavery, many freed slaves continued to be enslaved in different ways. Former slaves generally lacked an education, had no money, found it difficult to find jobs, and often found themselves working in the same jobs they'd just found themselves freed of. It was a difficult time for everyone, but until these former slaves were afforded the necessary tools they needed for success, their circumstances would change very little.
